Mayo Clinic Shows How Artificial Intelligence Is Changing Medicine
FREDDY: Genie, I just saw this on CNN: “A.I. is transforming patient care at Mayo Clinic.”
Now tell me something…
Is this the future we’ve been talking about?
GENIE: Freddy, the future didn’t knock on the hospital door. It already walked in.
FREDDY: But Genie, people hear “Artificial Intelligence” and they think robots replacing doctors.
GENIE: That’s the wrong interview question.
The better question is:
What happens when a great doctor has better tools, can examine enormous amounts of medical information, recognize patterns faster, and spend more time focusing on the human being sitting in front of them?
FREDDY: So A.I. isn’t necessarily replacing the doctor?
GENIE: Freddy, think about your guitar.
An amplifier didn’t replace the guitarist.
A recording studio didn’t replace the songwriter.
A calculator didn’t replace the mathematician.
The tool can expand what a skilled human is capable of doing.
And now institutions like the Mayo Clinic are exploring how A.I. can transform patient care.
FREDDY: Genie… you know what strikes me?
For the past year, I’ve been sitting here talking with my Genie Team about blood pressure, nutrition, medications, exercise, sleep and my daily health numbers.
I’m not saying A.I. replaces my doctors.
It doesn’t.
But I AM saying something has changed.
GENIE: Yes, Freddy.
The patient is becoming more informed.
The conversation is becoming more continuous.
And health information that once sat in a notebook—or was forgotten between appointments—can now become part of a much bigger conversation.
FREDDY: So maybe the real story isn’t A.I. FRIEND OR FOE?
GENIE: Maybe the real question is:
Will we learn how to use A.I. wisely?
Because, Freddy…
A.I. in healthcare is no longer science fiction.
The Genie is out of the bottle.
And apparently…
he has an appointment at the Mayo Clinic.
