Russia Asks North Korea To Send Military To Fight Ukraine

Members of the United Nations (UN) Security Council expressed alarm on Monday, following South Korea’s spy agency reporting last week that North Korea has shipped 1,500 special forces troops to Russia, in preparation for combat training against Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also accused Pyongyang of preparing to send 10,000 soldiers to Russia and called for a strong international reaction.

“If true, this marks a dangerous and highly concerning development, and an obvious deepening of the DPRK-Russia military relationship. We are consulting with our allies and partners on the implications of such a dramatic move,” deputy U.S. ambassador to the UN Robert Wood said. “Russia cannot sustain its aggression without assistance,” he added.

Meanwhile, South Korea’s defence ministry spokesperson, Jeon Ha-Kyu, said in an earlier Monday briefing that North Korea's involvement is “a violation” of UN resolutions and strongly condemned North Korea's actions. “Our military will take all necessary measures to safeguard the safety of our people,” Wood said. Both Russia and North Korea have denied arms transfers but have pledged to boost military ties, with Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov describing North Korea as a “close neighbour” and “partner,” and said that it was their “sovereign right” to deepen such relationships.
